A Garden of Meaning, Beauty, and Connection

Located in Topeka, Kansas, the Kay McFarland Japanese Garden offers a peaceful retreat where nature, symbolism, and thoughtful design come together in every season.
Located within the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center

The Kay McFarland Japanese Garden is a tranquil space designed to invite reflection, connection, and a deeper appreciation for nature.

Inspired by traditional Japanese garden principles and shaped by the natural beauty of Kansas, the garden offers visitors a place to slow down, explore, and experience something meaningful.

A Garden Designed with Purpose

A Japanese garden is a world in miniature, where every element carries meaning.

Within this garden, two paths wind through the landscape, one direct and structured, the other curving gently and inviting exploration.

Both paths meet at the footbridge. It is here that a vow is made.

From that point forward, one path continues, symbolizing two lives joined and moving forward as one.

This sense of meaning makes the garden not only a place to visit, but a place to gather, celebrate, and honor life’s most important moments.

Each season brings a new expression of the garden.

Spring

Renewal, new beginnings, soft blooms and gentle movement

Summer

Lush greenery, shaded paths, water features and vibrant life

Fall

Warm tones, quiet beauty, the garden in transition

Winter

Stillness, structure, a peaceful landscape of form and contrast

No matter when you visit, the garden offers a setting that is always evolving and always meaningful.

A Place to Explore and Reflect

Visitors are invited to walk the paths, cross the bridge, and experience the intentional design that makes this garden unique.

Whether you come for a quiet moment or a shared experience, the garden offers a sense of calm that feels removed from the pace of everyday life.

A Setting for Life's Meaningful Moments

The same beauty and symbolism that define the garden create a powerful setting for weddings, celebrations, and gatherings of all kinds — from joyful beginnings to moments of remembrance.
